Japanese weather officials are warning of heatstroke as temperatures soar to dangerously high levels across the country.

The Meteorological Agency says hot, dry foehn winds are blowing down from the mountains in coastal areas along the Sea of Japan on Tuesday.

In Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, the daytime high was 39.1 degrees Celsius. The northeastern city of Yamagata saw 37.5 degrees, while the western city of Matsue observed 36.1 degrees.

In the northern prefecture of Hokkaido, 35.5 degrees was recorded in Asahikawa City. Sapporo, also in Hokkaido, has had temperatures of 30 degrees or higher for 14 days in a row.

The high in the capital Tokyo was 32.9 degrees.

The agency and the Environment Ministry have issued heatstroke alerts for much of the country.

People are being urged to stay indoors, keep hydrated, use air conditioning and to remove face masks while outdoors if they can properly distance themselves from others.

The inflow of warm, moist air has been feeding rainclouds, bringing the possibility of localized downpours nationwide.

Weather officials are also urging caution for flooding, as well as sudden gusts of wind.
